If you’ve been downtown lately, you’ve felt it: Hastings-on-Hudson is getting more walkable, more lively, and more fun to spend a morning in. From my storefront at 10 Spring Street, I’ve watched the village put real work into the streetscape — and watched new shops fill in around the corner.
Spring Street sidewalks: easier to walk, easier to linger
The Spring Street sidewalks have been reconstructed, and on the south side the walk was widened by about four feet. That sounds technical until you walk it with a stroller, a coffee, or a weekend visitor. More room to pass, to pause, to actually enjoy the block. It’s one of the biggest quality-of-life upgrades downtown in years.
Municipal building under renovation
The municipal building is in the middle of extensive exterior renovations — scaffolding and all. It’s the kind of investment that says the village is taking care of its bones, not just its storefronts.
New shops (and old favorites) making the village hum
Rivertown Thrift has opened and is thriving — a great add for browsing after you grab coffee or run a village errand.
And this week: just north opened at the old 2 Greene spot. It’s wonderful — thoughtfully curated, and another reason to walk the village instead of driving past it.
Aussies is coming soon to the former Wild Culture space. From experience, expect breakfast and coffee that will be top-notch — another morning destination for the village.
Food for Thought is another downtown bright spot worth a stop and Transcending Time is currently under complete renovation, including a fresh exterior paint job on the buildings. It’s a lot of work in progress, and it’ll look great when it’s done.
And Good Witch is thriving as usual. On many mornings it’s become a kind of unofficial town center — neighbors, dogs, laptops, and that small-village rhythm that makes Hastings feel like Hastings.
For dinner (or a drink) downtown, Boro 6 remains one of our wonderful village restaurants — the kind of place that makes a weeknight feel like a night out without leaving Hastings.
Free parking this fall
One more practical win: free parking is coming this fall. That matters for shoppers, diners, and anyone who’s hesitated to make a quick stop downtown. Combined with wider sidewalks, it’s a friendlier village for locals and for people considering a move here.
What a great time to be downtown
Wider walks, a refreshed municipal building, Rivertown Thrift, just north, Food for Thought, Transcending Times renovation, Aussies on the way, Good Witch humming, Boro 6 for dinner, free parking ahead — downtown Hastings is in a good moment.
